Copy of 3rd Quarter Newsletter: January - March

We have made it through the winter. The January weather caused us to close a few

weekends. Also, Mrs. Grable’s hospitalization put a lot of added work on Larry Benson to

keep the Museum open, for which we are most grateful. However, we are looking forward to

the spring and summer events.

Chautauqua - Henry Clay

One event that is coming up on April 20 th is another Chautauqua Presentation by Kevin Hardesty. We are able to obtain this wonderful performance through the Kentucky Humanities. Kevin will perform as Henry Clay at the Cynthiana Christian Church on Monday, April 20 th at 5:00 p.m. Those who attended his Daniel Boone performance last fall will want to make plans to

attend this presentation as well. If you missed last year's event, you owe it to yourself to

be sure not to miss this one.

Our annual Great Museum Treasure Hunt is gearing up to begin when school is over for this

school year. We are going to choose six artifacts, one for each week from June 5 th through

July 24th. Students in K-12 will locate the artifact, answer questions about the artifact, and be

eligible for local treats and a weekly drawing for $10 and a final drawing for $250 at the end

of the Treasure Hunt. Students may participate each week. This will be our 12th Great Museum Treasure Hunt, and we are looking for many young visitors. This is also a time when we need volunteers to help the Treasure Hunt move smoothly. If you are interested in

local history and want to encourage the next generation to share in your interest, please

consider volunteering at the Museum, especially during the Treasure Hunt.

Visitors from Westside Elementary

On June 5th, the Museum will host visitors from Westside School. They will not only get a special tour, but also be the first to participate in the Treasure Hunt. We are so excited about this

opportunity to share with our elementary schools. We encourage all teachers to consider

bringing their students to the Museum during the school year. It is a field trip that is well

worth the effort.

In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we offer our condolences to Kenny Simpson, the former Museum

Director, on the passing of his wife, Janet Simpson. Janet and Kenny were avid supporters of

the Museum. Although Kenny isn’t active now, we still miss his historical perspective and

pictures of local interest.

Another person, in need of recognition, who passed away recently is Sue Williams. Upon

entering the nursing home, Sue gifted the Museum with many of her Army uniforms. Visitors

may view her “dress uniform” when they enter our Military Room. This display receives

many comments, and we are most grateful for the variety of uniforms that she has gifted the

Museum.

The Museum will continue to submit articles to “The Museum Corner” in the Cynthiana

Democrat. Each month, there are featured reprints from George Slade’s Museum Musings

and John Cromwell’s Cromwell’s Comments. In addition, there is a “What’s New At The

Museum” article, as well as a reprint of a “Recipe” taken from one of our vintage cookbooks

here at the Museum. If you have not noticed these articles, be on the lookout.

New Artifacts

The Museum gets new artifacts each month. However, we are more and more aware that we

have limited space. We will try to accommodate gifts as much as we can. One such artifact

was a recent gift from Dr. Swinford’s office desk. This is a new acquisition and can be found in

our “Medical Room.” Many Harrison County residents may have spent time in front of this

very desk. Make plans to check it out in the coming days.

We continue to update our Civil War Letters from the Jones Family. You can visit our website

and click the link to this wonderful set of letters between a Harrison County soldier and his

wife during the war. You can hear the letters being read as you follow along. It really is quite

a remarkable addition to our Museum and one that needs to be shared.
