Our 11th Great Museum Treasure Hunt will begin the first weekend of June and run through

the last week of July. Students in K-12 grades are encouraged to come to the Museum, locate

the weekly artifact, answer questions, and receive a pizza certificate from Leono’s. In

addition, each participant will be eligible for a weekly drawing of $10 from City Bank and

Cookies from Avi’s Bakery. All participants are eligible for a final $250 grand drawing that will

finish up the Treasure Hunt the end of July.

Jr. History Club Ends its Second Session

Our Junior History Club completed its second year of activities for 5 th -9 th graders. Thanks to

Will Lucky, Mia Williams, Karen Bear and Larry Benson who have worked with these students

on some really fun activities, and thanks to the students who participated this year. Plans are

in the works for another successful year.

The Museum launched a new collaboration with the Cynthiana Democrat this past year, by submitting articles under the heading of the Museum Corner. It featured reprints from

George Slade’s Museum Musings and Cromwell’s Comments as well as other articles

pertaining to current Museum news. An assessment will be made as to whether to continue

with this endeavor once the Treasure Hunt is over. For the months of June and July the

Democrat will feature our Treasure Hunt artifacts each week.

Many Updates and Improvements

  • New Artifacts and Reading Room

    • Our core volunteers have opened up a new reading room and moved many of our books into that space, thus opening up other areas for display. If you have not been to the Museum for a while, it is time to stop by and see the new layout. You will be amazed.

  • Marquee

    • Along with the inside renewal, our outside Marquee has been refurbished thanks to Bobby Poindexter!

Hidden Treasure

During the marquee restoration process, the neon “R” sign was uncovered on the front of the structure. No one knew it was there. Inquiries were made and the tin sign representing ROHS Theatre was taken to Advent Signs & amp; Neon in Nicholasville. Rick Garr, the owner and restorer, brought it back from decades of neglect. It now hangs inside the Museum, and its glow is a wonderful thing to now have on display.

Many New Artifacts

Another artifact on display that is a recent acquisition is the dress uniform of Sue Williams

who retired from the Army in the late 1990s. Before going into the nursing home, Sue

expressed the desire to have her uniform on display in the Museum. We were happy to

accommodate her wishes. In fact we purchased a mannequin to properly display the full

dress uniform that featured a long skirt.

A few weeks ago Glen Whitaker, who now lives in Florida and is big supporter of the

Museum, was in town visiting family and brought in a rather unique artifact that he had

made as a child. It was a wooden frame with a handle that allowed him to wind up his kite

string. As many of us just used a stick to wind a kite string around, this artifact presented

itself as a highly complex contraption for a young child to have used, much less figured out.

It’s worth as trip to the Museum to see it in person.

Books Galore!

Our book selection for purchase continues to grow. Bill Penn’s books about Harrison County

include the following topics: Famous Horses; Railroads; Lost Buildings; Schools; & REA. We,

also, have his hardcover-Rebel Town. South Fork of Licking by Richard Anderson is available

for purchase. Laura Derr’s Tobacco Wars in Harrison Co. is, also, on sale here. We still have

copies of our first books, Lucinda Boyd’s Chronicles of Cynthiana; Katherine Wilson’s This Old

House and John Cromwell’s Cromwell’s Comments available to buy. Inquiries may be made

to our email account: harricynmuseum@gmail.com.

Join the Harrison County Historical Society!

The Harrison County Historical Society is kind enough to include news from the Trust about

the Museum in their Newsletters. If you are not a member of the Historical Society, you may

want to consider joining. You may check the Historical Society out on their website.

Membership forms are, also, available at the Museum. Denny Lipscombe is the president and

has many informative programs planned. The June 12 th meeting will be Roger Slade’s Old

Graveyard presentation at the location on North Main Street.

Upcoming Events:

In addition to our Great Treasure Hunt Summer crowds, we are gearing up for

the fourth week of July when we will celebrate our 31 st Anniversary as a Museum.

The Rod Run on Aug. 23 rd will be another day when we are expecting a lot of visitors.

Our Cynthiana-Harrison County Trust Membership Form is enclosed. We are always needing

more weekend volunteers to help out with greeting visitors. Currently, the two volunteers

who can commit to both Friday and Saturday are Larry Benson and Mary Grable. Anna Ruth

McLoney is available on the third Friday of the month. Otherwise, we take anyone who can

show up. If you are retired and need something to fill up a few hours, we are your answer.

This summer would be a great time to join the Museum crew. It is always an interesting

weekend!!
